Planning and Zoning

Growth is coming to Atlanta and we need to figure out the best way to accommodate that growth while respecting the character of our wonderful neighborhoods in Buckhead and throughout the city.

The City of Atlanta uses a Comprehensive Development Plan (“CDP”) to guide our growth and development. The CDP is used to prioritize public investments and make changes to development policies for the city, such as our Zoning Ordinance. Atlanta must update its CDP every five years, and the next update must be adopted by October of 2026.

The City of Atlanta began working on a rewrite of our Zoning Ordinance a few years ago, but that work is on hold while we, all of us, work on the update of our CDP, because the CDP is the plan, and the Zoning Ordinance is how that plan gets implemented.

We all have an opportunity to engage in developing the update to the current CDP, called “Plan A.” You can find out more about the process and how to get involved by going to https://www.atlantaforall.com/. We recommend going to that website and signing up for their communications.
There will be several opportunities to learn more and provide input. You will find those on the website, but there will be a kick-off event on Thursday, February 29, from 5-7pm at Greenbriar Mall. There will then be smaller community workshops in March, April, May and June. There will also be an online survey with a mapping tool to allow people to describe precisely where growth would best be accommodated and how.
