Under Mayor Andre Dickens, Crime Continues to Plummet
Homicides Down in 2024 – More Police Officers on the Street
Atlanta is Safer than Ever

Under the Administration of Andre Dickens, the City of Atlanta is safer than ever.
Dickens announced on Monday that crime dropped significantly citywide in 2024, with major reductions in homicides, auto thefts and more. Homicides dropped 8% last year.
“We’re making significant improvements in all categories of public safety,” and the city is well on its way to reach my goal of Atlanta being the safest large city in America, said Mayor Dickens.
APD Chief Darin Schierbaum thanked Mayor Dickens for making public safety the cornerstone of his Administration, noting that the mayor has invested in the men and women of the Atlanta Police Department and all public safety-related departments and partners.
Some of the key findings of the Atlanta Police Department Report for 2024 include:
HOMICIDES
- 2024 127 homicides
- 2023 137 homicides
- 2022 171 homicides
ROBBERIES
- 2024 506 robberies
- 2023 599 robberies
- 2022 705 robberies
SHOOTINGS
- 2024 540 victims
- 2023 583 victims
- 2022 669 victims
E-911 Calls
- 1,277,553 total calls
- 746,318 APD responded calls
DISPATCHER CUT ANSWERS TIME IN HALF
- 2024 12.54 seconds
- 2023 24.33 seconds

The report also showed that under the Dickens Administration, there are more officers on the street than ever before.
“The number one reduced area of crime in our city last year was vehicle theft, 29% down over the previous year. If you look at robberies, robberies were down 15%. Persons shot in our city is down 7%. And more than 3,000 guns were removed from the streets, and drug operations were dried up. Every five days, the Atlanta Police Department shuts down a drug dealing operation in this city,” said Schierbaum.
Zone 3, located in southeast Atlanta, has seen the most significant decrease in crime. Major Ricker and Captain Pettis from Zone 3 were awarded with the 2024 Crime Reduction Award.
The chief also pointed out that the fire department is also helping to reduce crime, noting that those who are experiencing violence can take refuge at any fire department citywide. These fire departments serve as safe spots.
One thing is for certain, the public safety strategy of Mayor Dickens – through the vision of his One Safe City – is working. Atlanta is safer as a result.
