Conversation with Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens (Part 3 of 3)

3. Although the state legislature did not move forward this year on taking steps to create a new Buckhead City, what message do you have for those who are continuing to push to break up the City of Atlanta?1. What is your highest priority as Mayor of Atlanta?Atlanta Mayor, Andrea Dickens and Jim Durrett

Well, first of all I want to thank Governor Kemp, Speaker Ralston, and Lt. Governor Duncan for their leadership and partnership on this issue. I want the people of Buckhead to know that I hear them. I understand their concerns and they are right to be concerned about public safety in their neighborhoods and across the city. That is why I am determined to address rising crime across our city.

Breaking up our city is not the answer. It would be a disaster for everyone. It is far better for us to work together during challenging times. That is what made Atlanta great and what has made Buckhead one of the most special communities in all of America. We are making progress. I am pleased that more than 60 percent of the residents in Buckhead want to stay united. We’re addressing core issues that people have flagged, like making sure our garbage and recycling pickup is back to where it should be, filling potholes through our Pothole Posse, and addressing core public safety issues through our new Nightlife Division and our Light Up the Night initiative. As my Administration moves forward on implementing our public safety plan, I think more and more people will agree that we are one city and one people, with one bright future.
